The Cape Fear Flyers is a Cross Country and Junior Olympic Running Team for kids Ages 6-18

IMG_4498The Cape Fear Flyers is a non-profit organization that offers Junior Olympic Cross Country and track and field at an affordable rate to ensure that children from all socioeconomic groups have the opportunity to experience the lifetime benefits of track and field.

We are currently seeking partners in our community to help us expand our reach and continue to offer only the best coaching to our athletes.

Helping the youth of our community is rewarding all by itself.  However, we also offer some additional incentives for partnering with our organization.  These incentives include your company logo our banners and clothing, link and promotion of your business on our website/social media and the recommendation of your business to our team members and their friends and family.

  • Ran Cross Country and Track in High School and college
  • 2 mile record holder at his high school.
  • 10 years experience working with youth organizations
  • Has 2 children who actively participate in Cape Fear Flyers.

Board Member, Webmaster

  • Teacher at Anderson Elementary
  • Coach for Anderson’s Girls on the Run Team for 5 years.
  • Has two teenage daughters who run for Ashley High School
Greg Zinner

Cross Country Head Coach

  • Began running in 8th grade with the Booster Club Track as a member of Army Track Team
  • Ran track and cross country at Leighton High School and was the team Cross
  • Country MVP his senior year and holds the school record of a 4:36 in the 1600 meter run
  • Competes and often wins races from 5k’s to a 50 mile ultra.
  • Level 1 Certified USA Track and Field Coach

  • Assistant teacher at Island Montessori Charter School
  • Boys’ Coach for IMCS Turtle Trotters
  • Town of Carolina Beach Plastic Bag Committee
  • Has three Flyers competing!
Shawn McKee

CEO, Founder, Head Coach

  • At 12 years old, a member of the original Cape Fear Flyers team
  • Head Cross Country Coach at Ashley High School for 8 years and Assistant
  • Coach for Track and Field.
  • Competed in Junior Olympic National tournament placing 9th in the 2000 Steeple Chase as a young Cape Fear Flyer
  • Shawn won 1 st  Place in the Conference Championship his freshmen year in the 2-mile at Hoggard High School.
  • Still a competitive avid runner
  • Works at the Island Gazette along with his wife Jasmine and has 4 children

  • Graduate of UNCW and competed in the Hurdles, Pole Vault and Sprints
  • Inducted into the UNCW Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2014
  • Level 1 Certified USA Track and Field Coach
  • Represented Team USA at the 2015 Sprint Triathlon World Championships in 2015.
  • Married and has two children who participate in the Flyers
Amie Harrison

Coach, Girls Cross Country and Track

  • Began running in middle school with the original Cape Fear Flyers team
  • Ran track and cross country in high school and graduated from UNCW
  • Taught for 8 years and now spending time with her family while working as a certified personal trainer
  • Runs competitively in local races
  • 3 children participating in Cape Fear Flyers
  • Level 1 Certified USA Track and Field Coach
June Knott

Board Member, Treasurer

  • Joined Cape Fear Flyers when her son became interested in running and was looking for a group for training
  • Zachary and his father consistently win local races and June’s other son may join the team this spring as well
  • Feels Cape Fear Flyers instills the love of running and physical fitness in their kids along with some life lessons on teamwork, hard work and determination.
